World Suicide Prevention Day 2025: Changing the Narrative on Suicide

Every year, on 10 September, people across the world come together for World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a time to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and show that suicide is preventable.

This year’s theme – Changing the Narrative on Suicide – invites us all to think differently about suicide and how we respond when people are struggling. Too often, suicide is hidden in silence, fear, or misunderstanding. Changing the narrative means moving towards openness, empathy, and hope.

Misconceptions about suicide can prevent people from speaking out or reaching for help. By challenging these myths, we can break down barriers and support one another more effectively.

Myth 1: Talking about suicide will put the idea in someone’s head.
Reality: Asking someone directly if they are thinking about suicide does not encourage them to act on it. In fact, it can be a relief for someone to share their feelings and know that they are not alone.

Myth 2: People who talk about suicide are just seeking attention.
Reality: Talking about suicide is often an invite for help and should always be taken seriously. Listening with care and without judgement can make a real difference.

Myth 3: If someone is determined to end their life, nothing can stop them.
Reality: Many people experiencing suicidal thoughts feel torn. They may want their pain to end, but not their life. With the right support, people can and do recover. Reaching out and staying connected can save lives.

We all have a role to play in changing the way we talk about suicide. That doesn’t mean you need to have all the answers. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply:

Ask, “How are you really doing?”

Listen without judgement.

Offer your support and encourage seeking professional help.

Remind them they are not alone.

Conversations about suicide can feel difficult, but they are vital. By showing compassion, we let people know their lives matter and that help is available.

Support is Available

If you are struggling, or worried about someone else, please reach out for support:

  • NHS 111 – for urgent health concerns.

  • Your GP – for professional advice and support.

  • In an emergency, dial 999.

  • Samaritans: 116 123 (free, available 24/7).

  • Breathing Space: 0800 83 85 87 (for support in Scotland).

This World Suicide Prevention Day, let’s commit to Changing the Narrative on Suicide. Let’s replace silence with openness, stigma with understanding, and hopelessness with compassion.

Every conversation matters. Every life matters. Together, we can create a culture where reaching out is encouraged, support is available, and hope is always possible.
