Foyer Families

Foyer Families is a fully funded 12-week personal development and employability programme created and delivered by Aberdeen Foyer for parents and carers with children under 18.

The programme supports parents and carers to build confidence, develop employability skills, improve wellbeing and explore future opportunities in further education, training or employment.

Foyer Families is delivered online, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9.30am to 2.30pm, with access to course leaders and personalised support throughout the programme.

The Programme Helps Parents and Carers To:

  • Build personal confidence

  • Develop employability skills

  • Gain recognised qualifications

  • Meet other parents and contribute to shared learning

  • Take part in a meaningful team experience

  • Improve health and wellbeing for themselves and their family

  • Learn more about child development through learning and play

  • Explore future options, including further education, training or work

Learners will complete five City & Guilds units:

  • Building Personal Confidence

  • Contributing to Healthy Living

  • Effective Skills and Qualities for Learning and Work

  • Coping with Change

  • Managing Personal Finance

Participants may also have the opportunity to attend wellbeing sessions, including Mindfulness, Stretch and Tone and Tai Chi, as well as course-related talks from external organisations and partners.

Access to digital equipment may be available during the course. We can also provide support with funding childcare where learners are eligible.

What The Programme Involves

Week 1: Getting to Know You
Learners get the chance to meet one another, get to know the course leaders and set the foundation for their Foyer Families journey.

Weeks 2 and 3: Building Personal Confidence
Learners explore what personal confidence means to them and take part in activities designed to help build confidence, self-belief and personal strengths.

Weeks 4 and 5: Contributing to Healthy Living
Learners look at what contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Guided cooking sessions, Food Hygiene learning and a range of relevant activities are used to support this part of the course.

Weeks 6 and 7: Effective Skills and Qualities
Learners identify and build on their existing skills and qualities, helping them prepare for future learning, volunteering or work. This includes CV building, mock interviews and exploring progression pathways.

Weeks 8 and 9: Managing Personal Finance
Learners focus on planning and preparation, including how to create budget plans and manage money. Financial inclusion sessions support learners to build confidence in managing their finances.

Weeks 10 and 11: Coping with Change
Learners explore different types of change, the impact change can have and strategies that can help them cope with change in everyday life.

Week 12: What’s Next?
Learners review their progress, discuss future steps and celebrate their achievements through graduation.
